Great info. In thing to stress: don't let your kids get caught up in the gear game. A great musician can make a junk instrument sound great. Granted, it is so much more enjoyable to play a nice instrument that is in great shape, through a great amp. Most importantly, make everything is loud enough to be heard at a gig without being mic'ed by the house PA. I'd recomment at least 200 watts for bass amps, and 50 watts is great for guitar. With guitar, it's almost more about having enough speakers to push the air, so a 4x12 cabinet on a 50 watt amp will sound fuller than a 2x12 50 watt amp. These volume levels will become more crucial if you have a drummer who hits hard. For a vocal P.A., I'd also say 200 watts minimum. Also, tube amps have great character and sound -- while they may be more temperamental, they give more character than a solid state amp can.
